Sumdog Reading

Sumdog Reading is a premium feature.  

A reading subscription lets you access questions on grammar, spelling, and punctuation to Sumdog. You'll also have access to powerful testing and reporting tools to track the progress your students make.

Once you've purchased a subscription and assigned your reading subscription places you can switch between subjects on the teacher dashboard.

To monitor Sumdog Reading:

  1. Log into Sumdog with your teacher account
  2. Click on the drop-down arrow at the top of the page (next to your class name)
  3. Tick Reading
  4. Click 'Done' at the bottom right of the page
  5. You will now be directed back to your dashboard. On the top of the page you will now see Reading (instead of Math for example).  

In the center of the page under Today's Classroom you will now see the Reading report for the students in your selected class.

 

You'll also be able to set Challenges, Assessment or Competitions for your students on Sumdog Reading. 

To set Challenges on Sumdog Reading:

  1. Log in to Sumdog with your teacher account.
  2. Click Set work on the top of the page (next to Overview)
  3. Click CREATE & VIEW in the Challenge box
  4. Choose a 'Reading' as the subject and click 'Next'.
  5. Choose the class or students you would like to set the Challenge for and click Next 
  6. If you would like Sumdog to choose the skills the students are asked (these skills will be based on their diagnostic test score) click Next, however if you would like to set skills for your students click on the Set skills link on the bottom. Note: you can set different skills for each student by ticking the box next to their name and then selecting Set skills
  7. If you are setting skills tick the skills you would like the selected students to answer, you can use the filters on the left to short the skills. Once done click Next
  8. Click Next once you are happy with the skills
  9. You can now name the Challenge and set the start and end date. Correct answer target will be the number of correct answers your students have to get before they are awarded the bonus coins. Click Next to create.
  10. To set the Challenge click Done

The students will now be able to select the Challenge from their City page under the Activity panel once the Challenge has started.

 

To set Assessment on Sumdog Reading:

Assessments allow you to create a specific set of questions to test your class on. When a student takes an assessment, they'll be answering outside of Sumdog's games, much like a paper test. The results are sent to you in real time and you can share or print these if you wish.

  1. Log in to Sumdog with your teacher account.
  2. Click Set work on the top of the page (next to Overview)
  3. Click CREATE & VIEW in the Assessment box
  4. Choose a 'Reading' as the subject and click 'Next'.
  5. Choose the class or students you would like to set the Challenge for and click Next 
  6. You can now name the Assessment, the number of questions you would like the students to answer, the time limit they have to answer those questions and set the start and end date. Click Next once done.
  7. You can now tick the skills you would like to include and click Done.
  8. If you are setting skills tick the skills you would like the selected students to answer, you can use the filters on the left to short the skills. Once done click Next
  9. You will now see a preview of the questions the students will be asked. Click on the refresh button on the right if you would like to change a question. Note: you can also print out a paper version for students to complete as homework if they don't have a internet access.
  10. Click Create once you are happy with the questions

Once it is the start date for the Assessment the students will automatically be brought to the Assessment page. They will see a giant clock in the background. Here is how they can start the Assessment. 

 

To set Competitions on Sumdog Reading:

  1. Log in to Sumdog with your teacher account.
  2. Click Set work on the top of the page (next to Overview)
  3. Click CREATE & VIEW in the Competition box
  4. Choose a 'Reading' as the subject and click 'Next'.
  5. Choose the class or students you would like to set the Challenge for and click Next 
  6. If you would like Sumdog to choose the skills the students are asked (these skills will be based on their diagnostic test score) click Next, however if you would like to set skills for your students click on the Set skills link on the bottom. Note: you can set different skills for each student by ticking the box next to their name and then selecting Set skills
  7. If you are setting skills tick the skills you would like the selected students to answer, you can use the filters on the left to short the skills. Once done click Next
  8. Click Next once you are happy with the skills
  9. You can now name the Competition and set the start and end date. You can also choose to have the students compete as individuals or as part of a team.
  10. Click Create on you have completed the setup.
  11. To set the Competition click Done

 

 

With a subscription you are also to run reports on your students to see how they are performing.  

To view reports on Sumdog Reading:

  1. Log into Sumdog
  2. On the top of the dashboard page click on Reports
  3. Select the report you would like to view

Proficiency: this will show you a chart of the skills your students have completed. You can also view skills completed in the last school year by selecting Change year on the bottom left of the page.

Class report: you will be able to select different metrics on the type of report you would like to view. Here are the types of reports you can view with the Class report.

Diagnostic results: this will show you your students diagnostic test sore. 

Admin reports: these are a separate reports and will need their own subscription, here is more information.

 

Students can access Sumdog Reading by changing the subject on the City page by clicking the blue subject panel.  

 

Reading activities are subscription features so you'll need to make sure your students are covered by a subscription place to do this. To try out these features, please get in touch.
