How to create a teacher account and join a school

As a teacher, you will need to register for an individual teacher account. This is important to ensure data security and privacy is maintained. 

Once you have registered for an account, you will be able to request to join your school.

Here is how to get started.

Creating a teacher account

Step 1: The first step is to register your teacher account. You can sign up for your free teacher account here


Navigate to this page, then click ‘Get started free’ under the ‘For teachers’ section of the page. 


Input the relevant details for your email, and add a secure password for your account. You can use your work email or private email, although we recommend using your work email where possible. 


It’s important to use a secure password, but don’t worry if you’re concerned about forgetting it. You can request a new password securely through our forgotten password function. 

Before you finish creating your account you will need to agree to Sumdog’s Terms of Use and Privacy Policy. Make sure you read through and understand these policies, then tick the box to confirm. Please feel free to contact us if there’s anything you’re concerned about. 

To create your account simply click ‘Sign up’ on the bottom right of the page.

Step 2: A confirmation email will be sent to the address you registered. This is to confirm that you are the account owner and have access to the registered email address. This must be verified within 14 days. If the account is not verified within 14 days the registration will be void and the account will be deleted. Screenshot__161_.png
Step 3: To confirm your account simply click on the link in the email, or copy and paste the web address into your browser and navigate to the page.
Step 4: Next up it’s time to log on and enjoy the benefits of Sumdog in your classroom! Your teacher account has been created. When you next log into your account you will be prompted to search and request to link up with your school account. Screenshot__77_.png

Updating details on your account

You will be able to edit details on your account once it has been created. You can edit the name, change the password and update your email address at your convenience. You can also update your communication preferences to change which communication you receive from Sumdog. Find out more about editing your account here.

Joining your school account

This guide will help you join an existing school account. If you need to create a new school account, scroll down to see our section on creating a new school account.

Step 1: Once you have set up your account, you will first be asked to confirm your country. Scroll down to choose from the list of countries. It will be set to the country in which you are currently based as a default. Screenshot__83_1.png

Step 2: You now need to fill in your school details. Begin inputting the relevant details for your school to narrow the search. A list of suggested schools will then appear in the details below.

You may see the initials of teachers currently linked to that school in order to help you narrow down to the correct institution. 

If you can’t see your school listed, it’s possible a school account has not yet been created. Click on the ‘Create’ box to establish a new school account. You can scroll down to find our guide on how to create a new school account.

Step 3: Once you have located the right school, click ‘Join’ to link yourself to that school.
Step 4: Completing your registration on the school account will require approval from an existing teacher at that school. Your request will show as pending on the Sumdog dashboard until this has been granted. Screenshot__160_.png

Step 5: Any existing teacher linked to a school account is able to verify your request. This provides a level of secure verification that you are linked to that school as a teacher.

When a teacher logs in they will be presented with a screen showing them that a new teacher has submitted a verification request. They can click ‘I CAN HELP’ to complete the verification process.


Step 6: Once your request has been approved you will then be able to link students to your class through the Sumdog dashboard.

Creating your school account

It is easy to create a new school account if your school does not currently have one. It is important to ensure that an existing account is not being duplicated when creating a new account.

Creating a duplicate account can cause confusion later on and data will not be shared between these two accounts. If in doubt - it’s best to check.

Step 1: Click the ‘Create’ button in the box entitled ‘Can’t see your school?’. This will appear on the ‘Find your school’ page. Screenshot__84_3.png
Step 2: Fill in the relevant details of your school including address, zip code/postal code, timezone and operating times. Screenshot__92_3.png

Step 3: Select the region in which your school is located and click ‘Next’. Don’t worry if you’re not sure which region is appropriate. We can always edit this for you later.

Regions are important as they are often used during Sumdog mathematics contests.

Step 4: Next you will be taken to a setup page for classes and students. This is where you link the students you teach to your class. This is important for setting tasks and tracking progress properly through the Sumdog teacher tools. Screenshot__90_.png
